This position is located at the United Nations Center for Human Rights and democracy in Central Africa, in Yaoundé. Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Center and the direct supervision of the National Programme Officer, information and documentation

Duties and Responsibilities
the incumbent will perform the following tasks:

1. Develop and ensure implementation of communication plans for sub regional activities including conferences and high profile visits;

2. Support design and implementation of human rights capacity building activities for a diversity of stakeholders including government partners, media and civil society;

3. Prepare briefing notes for senior officials on specific human rights issues in countries covered;

4. Develop and maintain relations with donors and financial partners and prepare donor reports on assigned projects;

5. Develop social media platforms, produce, edit and manage content for web-based media;

6. Build media relations and ensure effective media coverage of office activities;

7. Advise Regional Representative and visiting senior UN Human Rights officials on communications and media issues, develop and publicize press releases, and propose articles to a core group of partner news organs for publication;

8. Oversee the production and publication of the human rights and democracy newsletter “Rights & Democracy Focus”

9. Develop and oversee the implementation of advocacy plans for specific policy issues notably ratifications, reporting to human rights mechanisms and UPR, and fundraising;

10. Prepare a variety of reports ranging from monthlies, weeklies, daily sitreps as necessary and annual reports, specific project reports based on donor guidelines;

11. Support human rights programme staff in developing training modules and training related communication and outreach materials;

12. Support programme planning and monitoring based on office-wide expected accomplishments and develop operational plans, including managing the online programme monitoring system (PMS);

13. Develop a variety of necessary communication and advocacy tools ranging from video documentaries, factsheets, briefing notes, policy papers and situational analysis to inform wider opinion and key decision making at senior level;

14. Perform other tasks as requested by Regional representative


Professionalism - Advanced knowledge of the use of information management to improve the awareness on human rights and democracy issues in the sub region; Familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the Internet, intranet and other databases; Demonstrate problem-solving skills and ability to use sound judgment to ensure the effective and timely completion of complex tasks; Ability to work under pressure; Very good knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to human rights and democracy and sound knowledge of the institutions of the UN system;

Planning and Organizing - Ability to establish priorities, to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan; Demonstrated ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given;

Communication - Ability to speak and write in a clear and concise manner in English and French, including ability to draft a variety of reports, correspondences, and articulate ideas I a clear, concise style;

Technological Awareness - Fully proficient computer skills and use of relevant software and other applications, e.g. Word processing, spreadsheets, internal databases, internet, etc.

Teamwork – Good interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Required Skills and Experience


Completion of secondary education (Baccalaureat or GC-A)
Minimum five years professional experience in information and mass communication, preferably in the United Nations System,
A good knowledge of United Nations rules and procedures would be an asset,
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (outlook, word , excel, power point, internet)
Ability to work in a team and under pressure ;
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment ;
Ability to speak and write in a clear and concise manner in English and French
